Deploying NFC technology in the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco

The first experimental project implementing NFC (Near Field Communication) technology in Monaco was launched during WIMA 2008 along the route of the ‘NFC Parcours Princesse Grace Monaco’. Nokia NFC mobile phone users simply « touch » contact points along the itinerary to receive information and guidance, creating a completely new experience. The project, a collaboration between WIMA, the Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority, Nokia and NXP Semiconductors, was officially inaugurated in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.

With the objective of Monaco becoming one of the world’s leaders promoting the deployment of NFC technology, WIMA is presenting a new experimental project on the occasion of the NFC Forum members’ meeting in Monaco. It will be unveiled on Monday 1st December at 18:30 in the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, in partnership with the Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority, NMNM, Nokia, NXP Semiconductors and enamax studio.

This second, more technically advanced project will enable Nokia NFC mobile phone users to receive information about the different museum exhibits by holding the handset close to the contact points (tags) that are placed alongside the items on display. The information includes textual and photographic data, as well as audio and video content.

The technology used is Nokia 6212 NFC mobile phones, tags incorporating MIFARE technology provided by NXP Semiconductors, and enamax studio web services.

About NFC
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a new, short-range wireless connectivity technology that developed from a combination of existing contactless identification and interconnection technologies. Products with built-in NFC will dramatically simplify the way consumer devices interact with one another, helping people increase the speed of their connections, receive and share information and even make fast and secure payments.

About the NFC Forum
The NFC Forum, www.nfc-forum.org, was launched as a non-profit industry association in 2004 by leading mobile communications, semiconductor and consumer electronics companies. The Forum’s mission is to advance the use of Near Field Communication technology by developing specifications, ensuring interoperability among devices and services, and educating the market about NFC technology. The Forum’s 150 global member companies currently are developing specifications for a modular NFC device architecture, and protocols for interoperable data exchange and device-independent service delivery, device discovery, and device capability. The NFC Forum’s Sponsor members, which hold seats on the Board of Directors, include leading players in key industries around the world.
